McGill’s Buses, the UK’s largest independent bus operator, has welcomed Jim Fairlie MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Connectivity, to their Johnstone Depot for a tour of their facilities and to discuss the company’s ambitious journey towards a zero-emission future.
The visit coincides with McGill’s celebrating a significant milestone – having covered an impressive 12 million electric miles with their growing fleet of zero-emission buses.
During the tour, Mr. Fairlie explored the advanced electric fleet, including the state-of-the-art charging infrastructure, and learned more about McGill’s plans to further expand their sustainable operations. The visit highlighted McGill’s commitment to supporting Scotland’s vision for a greener public transport network.
Minister for Connectivity, Jim Fairlie MSP, praised McGill’s leadership in the shift to an electric fleet. He said:
"It’s inspiring to see McGill’s Buses at the forefront of Scotland’s transition to greener, cleaner transport. Achieving 12 million electric miles is a remarkable milestone that demonstrates their dedication to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable travel. The Scottish Government is committed to supporting operators like McGill’s, as we work together towards a net-zero future."
Tony Williamson, CEO of McGill’s Buses, emphasised the company’s long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability. Mr Williamson said:
“Welcoming Mr Fairlie to our Johnstone Depot gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase our progress in delivering a zero-emission future. Reaching 12 million electric miles is a testament to the hard work of our team and our continued investment in cutting-edge technology. We’re excited to play a leading role in Scotland’s journey to net-zero emission and will continue to build on this momentum to provide cleaner, greener public transport for all.”
The company’s substantial £74 million investment in both the fleet and its associated infrastructure places McGill’s Bus Group among the top UK companies leading the way in fleet decarbonisation. McGill’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint aligns with Scotland’s wider environmental goals and the push towards net-zero emissions by 2045.
